Creating a culturally safe care space at Curalo Medical Clinic

When Curalo Medical Clinic in Eden set out to improve cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, it learned that simple actions, from local language artwork to a warm welcome at reception, can make a meaningful difference.

Through funding from COORDINARE's Culturally Safe Care initiative, the clinic engaged Aboriginal patients and community members to understand their experiences and identify opportunities for improvement.

The clinic introduced several initiatives:

Welcome signage in local language and Aboriginal artwork at the front desk.

Acknowledgement of country plaque developed in consultation with local Elders.

Cultural awareness training embedded in staff orientation and policy.

A charter of commitment to culturally safe care, co-created by the team.

The project also improved access to care through the purchase of a 24-hour blood pressure monitor and the creation of a dedicated yarning space for patients, families and culturally safe health activities.

Local Elders have recognised the clinic's efforts, while staff report stronger relationships with Aboriginal patients. The initiative demonstrates how listening to community voices and acting on feedback can create more inclusive, accessible and culturally safe health services.
